Nestled in the Hill Country, a short drive from the Kerrville area is one of the greatest attractions in Texas…the town of Fredericksburg.
The town was founded in 1846 and named after Prince Frederick of Prussia. It was home to German settlers who initially refused to learn English. Because of this, Fredericksburg is known as home to what’s called, “Texas German”, a dialect spoken by those settlers.
While small, there’s certainly no lack of things to do around town. In fact, there’s a large and growing list of things to experience, see, taste and drink.
History – With its unique history, there’s also over 80 points of historic interest and significance in the district. From houses to businesses to old structure’s, everywhere you look the town has a story to tell. There are free self-guided walking tours and most importantly, the Vereins Kirche Museum. The museum is located right at the heart of the town and houses memorabilia that tells the story of Fredericksburg’s full history.
Wine Tasting – Fredericksburg is the epicenter of Hill Country wine. There are over 45 wineries and vineyards in the area that take part in events, wine tours, tastings and other festivities. This season the vineyards and tasting rooms are cloaked in lights, warmth and holiday fun.
Shopping – Part of what makes Fredericksburg a charming place to visit is the downtown shops. You could spend an entire day walking the main street and wondering into antique shops, Christmas shops, German kitchen supply stores or a myriad of other eclectic and adorable storefronts.
Ongoing Events and Festivals – Film festivals, Oktoberfest, craft fairs, and car shows abound in the town of Fredericksburg. No matter what season, there is always something going on! The community is active and welcoming. Make sure when you do visit to check out an event calendar at the visitor’s center – there’s guaranteed to be something fun on the horizon.
